GATSBY ESSAY

So in class , Dr. Preston gave us a couple of prompts on what to write about and i chose , The notion of the American dream figures prominently in this story.  How do readers define the American dream? Moreover, is pursuing the American dream necessarily a good thing?

My answer or thought about it is that i think the American dream is that to be rich or have parties in a huge mansion and just feel wealthy. Readers define the american dream as living a luxurious life. In Great Gatsby , Gatsby is living the american dream. He throws parties and has girls over and his vehicles and has a lot of money.
Living the american dream can be a good thing in some cases. If you’re living in isolation but have a lot of money, you can have a lot of money but feel lonely and that’s kind of Gatsby’s case but he created an affair with Daisy to not feel lonely and to feel loved. He also had Tom but like he didn’t really have anyone living with him. In a big mansion and just him by himself. In the story , Fitzgerald made it seem like Gatsby was an isolated man who didn’t care about nobody but himself & a person who is hard and kind of careless.
Gatsby was living an american dream but wasn’t good for him . I’m trying to describe it but it’s like a feeling of loneliness. There’s different types like externally , internally , even in your head. He was rich and had an affair but he could’ve just been missing love and that’s a part of living the FULL american dream i think.
Pursuing the american dream can be achieved by either being inherited like by your parents being rich and just getting that or actually taking risks and keep trying to achieve the american dream. I think it’s good when you’re pursuing it because that shows that you’re a hard worker and getting your shit done and not giving up on your dream.
